Nichiren Shu

Nichiren Shu is the Buddhist school personally founded by the Buddhist Master, religious prophet and reformer,  Nichiren Shonin (1222-1282) on 28th April 1253 . He expounded the doctrine that the Lotus Sutra represents the culmination and heart of the genuine doctrines of all the teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.

Our belief in this doctrine is affirmed by our daily chanting and study of the Lotus Sutra and the Odaimoku (Sacred Title) of "Namu Myoho Renge Kyo," ("Adoration to the Scripture of the Lotus of the Perfect Truth"), meditation, the study all basic tenets of Buddhism and the writings of Nichiren Shonin. Through our daily practice we connect to our innate Buddha Nature possessed by all sentient beings. This allows us to live happy, satisfying and tranquil lives while reaching towards the enlightenment of Buddhahood.

We further believe that Nichiren Shonin is a Great Bodhisattva, specifically sent by the Buddha as a the messenger to guide each and every one of us in cultivating our Buddha nature, a quality inherent in all beings, and establishing a way of life consistant with the eternal truths preached by Sakyamuni Buddha.

Nichiren Shu today is a confederation of most of the major lineages lineages that developed over seven centuries of history, descending from the original disciples of Nichiren Shonin. The Head Temple of Nichiren Shu, Kuonji, is located on Mt. Minobu in Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan where Nichiren spent the last 8 years of his life and where his tomb is located. It is considered the most sacred temple throughout Nichiren Shu, and many believers of Nichiren Shu as well as other Nichiren organizations make regular pilgrimages there. Kuonji houses a Buddhist University as well as the Shingyo Dojo Monastery where the final 35 days of training, education and certification for new Nichiren Shu priests and nuns is held. The administrative headquarters of Nichiren Shu is located at Ikegami Honmonji in southern Tokyo, the temple where Nichiren Shonin passed away in 1281. It governs more than 5300 temples throughout Japan and abroad.

Nichiren Shu was first propagated propagated outside Japan after the demise of our Founder in 1282. First on the Asian continent by the Founder's disciple, Nichiji Shonin, followed by a second wave of propagation six centuries later by many priests and believers beginning over one hundred years ago in Hawaii and North America. This was followed by yet another wave of propagation and the establishment of temples in Asia and Brazil in the last century, and finally in Europe beginning in the 1990's. Today there are three temples in Europe, one in the United Kingdom, another in Germany and one in Italy.

Renkoji Temple serves as a spiritual home and dojo for all of its members, followers and friends interested in sincerely learning the teachings of the Eternal Buddha Shakamuni through daily practice and study, under the direct instruction of certified Nichiren Shu priests.
